Literally elevated, the work describes landscapes, environments, people, events, with the vividness of a representation; it delineates characters and situations with introspective skill; it expounds joys and dramas with the feeling of one who really participates in them; it informs about environmental characteristics, customs, rituals, cultures, with impeccable detail. Through the gripping account of the Redeemer’s earthly life, full of speeches and dialogues, she illustrates the whole doctrine of Christianity in accordance with Catholic orthodoxy.

Maria Valtorta wrote this work from 1944 to 1947. Some of the last episodes are from 1951. She did not always proceed in narrative order. At times, for contingent spiritual needs, she had to write one or more episodes out of the plot, and later Jesus himself indicated to her where they should be inserted. Despite the sporadic discontinuity in the writing and despite the absolute lack of preparatory outlines, both written and mental, the work has a perfectly organic structure from beginning to end. Moreover, Maria Valtorta interspersed it with pages on various topics, which she began writing in 1943 (as soon as the Autobiography was completed) and continued in the following years until 1950. They shaped the minor works, which are published in five volumes, in addition to that of the Autobiography.

Three volumes – entitled respectively:

  • The Notebooks of 1943
  • The Notebooks of 1944
  • The Notebooks of 1945-1950

collect a miscellany of writings on ascetical, biblical, doctrinal and autobiographical themes, as well as descriptions of evangelical scenes and martyrdom of early Christians.

One volume, entitled Book of Azariah, offers commentaries on the texts (excluding those of the Gospel) of the festive missal.

The last volume is the Lectures on Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. Other scattered writings, which remained unpublished for many years, have been collected and published under the title Quadernetti.

The publication of the epistolary with Letters to Mother Teresa Maria (vols. 1 and 2), Letters to Bishop Carinci, and Letters to Father Migliorini has also been started.

Maria Valtorta’s major work has had four editions and numerous reprints.

  1. The first edition, entitled The Poem of the Man-God, was in 4 large volumes and was published from 1956 to 1959: one volume per year. The first of the 4 volumes was reprinted.
  2. The second edition, in 10 volumes, came out from 1961 (year of publication of the first volume) to 1967 (year of publication of the tenth volume). All volumes were continuously reprinted until the year 1992. The cover graphics were changed several times.
  3. The third edition, in 10 volumes, changed the title of the Work from ‘The Poem of the Man-God’ to ‘The Gospel as it was revealed to me’. It ran from 1993 (year of publication of the first four volumes) to 1998 (year of publication of the last volume).
